Pastoral Care

In The Cambrdige High School, Abu Dhabi each class has a class teacher who provides pastoral care for each individual student in the class. The class teacher also interacts with parents on academic, social or emotional issues. Within the curriculum itself, teachers ensure and plan for leadership development through group-work, project work, and activities designed to build confidence and self-esteem. The teacher also organises field trips, activities, bulletin boards for the class. The teachers encourage the class to be involved in the school assembly presentations, music concert, international evening, talent show, exhibition evening and other school functions.

Monitor System
Each class in the Junior School has a system of weekly Monitor rotation which provides each and every student with an opportunity of assuming a set of responsibilities:

a. taking the class attendance register to the Vice Principal at the end of morning registration
b. relaying messages from the teacher
c. ensuring that the class is neat and tidy at the end of school registration
d. assisting teachers during break time
e. ensuring that students in the class abide by the school's rules

House System

The school has four Houses and each House has a Junior School Captain and Vice Captain for the girls and a Junior School Captain and Vice Captain for the boys. The Senior School also has Captains and Vice Captains for girls and boys. Responsibilities include :
a. assisting House teachers
b. organising teams for various competitions
c. being role-models
d. encouraging participation and developing a healthy House spirit.

Within each House, captains are appointed within appropriate age categories to lead various teams such as sports teams, quiz teams and other teams in a range of activities. The intention is to provide as many pupils as possible with opportunities to lead and assume responsibilities.

Prefect System
A School Head Boy and a Head Girl with their Deputies and a team of Prefects (from Years 6 and 11 to 13) are selected by the staff and are appointed in a special Investiture Ceremony at the beginning of the academic year. Responsibilities include:
a. maintaining general pupil discipline
b. maintaining pupil discipline during break-times
c. maintaining pupil discipline on the buses
d. uniform checks
e. assisting the administration to organise school events
f. taking responsibilities during school events and parents' evenings
g. looking after classes on the mornings when staff have mini-briefings
h. organising litter patrols

Student Council
A  Student Council (one for girls and one for boys) of elected representatives from each Year Group from Years 5 to 13 meets fortnightly with the Senior Management Team. Issues are discussed and tasks are assigned to the representatives for student action within each Year Group.

Sixth Form Work Programme
Students are assigned tasks during free time (two periods a week) to expose them to a real life working environment. These tasks include helping at the Reception Desk, helping in the Library, assisting Kindergarten teachers, assisting PE teachers in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, assisting Computer teachers in Foundation and Key Stage 1.
